BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Honiton will have firmly  established itself as a vibrant, welcoming, niche market town with an attractive focal centre.

Supported by the local authorities and strategic agencies, all sectors of the economy in the area will have co-operated not only to enable traditional local businesses to survive and thrive, but also to generate and sustain a wide range of other business opportunities. All this will have helped the whole community to be confident in meeting challenges and managing change, and created a wide range of quality jobs for people of all ages and circumstances.

For those who live in the area it will be an attractive place to work and to spend money, especially on local produce and locally made goods. Additionally, for those visiting from outside the area, it will provide a good range of accommodation – and plenty of incentive to spend money because of the vibrancy of the local economy and the quality of the local produce, the locally-made goods and built environment, and the natural surroundings.

HOUSING

&

 COMMUNITY FACILITIES

Honiton will be a caring and  environmentally friendly town.

Housing will be well on the way to providing for a wide variety of household types, satisfying the needs of people with all levels of income, and reflecting energy-efficiency requirements.

There will be more lower-cost dwellings of good quality for both purchase and rent, and there will be robust systems in place to ensure that this stock remains available for people whose circumstances and income do not allow them to buy or rent at higher cost.

The pattern of community facilities – eg, education, health, leisure, meeting and mixing places – will have caught up with the expansion of the town that took place several decades earlier, by being: more extensive; appropriate to a variety of needs, for young, middle-aged and old alike; better distributed around the town; supportive of social cohesion, inclusiveness, community spirit, and friendliness; and able to harness the energy and creativity of all sections of the community.

SPORT & LEISURE

Honiton and surrounding area will have a well-established, substantial, professionally managed sports and leisure facility.

Able to provide for all the sports clubs in the area, without diminishing their distinctive identities, it will be inclusive of all aptitudes and abilities; will include provision for family-oriented recreation and other social activities; and will be able to put on major sporting events. These facilities will have been complemented by good provision of open spaces and paths for leisure walking and cycling within and around the town. In all these ways, we will have enhanced the opportunities for people to build their confidence and to keep fit and healthy, and for the community to be more socially cohesive.

TRANSPORT & INFRASTRUCTURE

Honiton will have a well integrated transport network offering good links and travelling within the town, between the town and its hinterland, and to and from other areas.

Car parking will be better distributed around the town, with well-signed and easy access, and walking routes from the car parks to the town centre will be attractive. Less through traffic and fewer heavy vehicles will be using the High Street; there will be an appropriate balance between the needs of motorists and of pedestrians; and the distinctive historical appearance of the High Street will have been retained. All this will encourage people to spend time and money in the town. Away from the High Street, there will be more opportunities for safe and pleasant walking and cycling experiences.
